If you have read this blog for any amount of time, of if you know me, you'll know camping isn't my favorite weekend activity. It's pretty near the bottom of the list. Until I get out there, and then I realize it isn't as bad as I thought it was going to be.
Particularly when you get to see water in the form of a small river, and have other people cook for you. Then it's easy to deal with non-flushing toilets, incredible wind, dirt and bugs.
For a night.
Especially when the kids get to catch fish and you catch the ginormous smiles on their faces. It's worth dealing with the outdoors for a bit.
We went with our ward (or the few families who actually participated) to a campground about 45 minutes from our house. It's beautiful, with a slow moving (and I'm sure man-made) river full of little fish to catch. A nice open field to set up tents, which the kids said was comfortable to sleep on. We wouldn't know since we used our air mattress. (thank you!)
One little note: if you ever have to sleep in the same tent or room as my kids, keep in mind you WILL NOT GET ANY SLEEP. I think we've raised the noisiest sleepers ever. They talk, chew, snore, hum, roll, toss and turn in their sleep. Did I mention roll? And talk? And chew? (yes, chew)
And sometime during the night Cael and Landry had turned perpendicular to their original positions, and Savannah had rolled over and propped her head up on the air mattress thinking it was her pillow.
Then the wind started to blow. Not just a nice summer breeze, but a West Texas wind. A West Texas wind which uprooted the tent stakes on our side of the tent. Which collapsed the side of the tent which we were attempting to sleep on.
Shane's the man though, because he shrugged off any fear of wild creatures in the form of bugs and re-staked the tent in the middle of the night.
The kids had no idea. They slept great, even if they snored and rolled and chewed.
